Sunset In Sorrento (Laura Svolos)

Sunset in Sorrento reflects my memory of time spent around the Amalfi Coast -- not as a literal landscape, but as an impression of color, light and space. The composition draws upon the simplified language of Piet Mondrian and Neoplasticism, featuring rectangular forms and a primary color palette that evoke the shimmering blues of the Mediterranean Sea and the expansive sky. A band of vivid yellow anchors the base of the composition – suggestive of both the warm glow of a setting sun and the abundant lemons that are so iconic to the region.
