Whitewash (Michael Smith)

Humanity is inextricably bound to concealment and discovery. "Whitewash" is a large-scale, multilayered acrylic work comprised of five distinct paintings built upon one another. Beginning with an intricate network of miniscule dots that map out figurative elements, structures, and landscapes, the canvas undergoes successive layers of mark-making before culminating in a stark white final overpainting. This deliberate act of erasure allows the vibrant history beneath to ghost through in fragments, capturing a personal perspective on time, memory, and what remains hidden than what is revealed.
