This is a painting of a family residing in a township in Paarl, South Africa (in the West Cape). The family allowed us in and allowed photos. I was a visiting pediatrician. There are no toys anywhere for the children and their residence is rudimentary with all gathering by this one couch. The earth theme is suggested by the food insecurity disproportionately affecting certain countries due to climate change with the little girl symbolically drinking her formula, the closeness to the earth that these individuals have to live and the fragile state of their home at risk for climate related ruin
