Language of reverence and the sacred often frame discussions of the earth and the environment. Whether grounded in religious or secular ideals, most of us acknowledge a duty to care for the earth. In this piece, the artist uses rich texture overlaid with graffiti-like painted figures, markings, and typography to comment ironically on the sacred and the profane, the earth and humans’ incomplete care (or even volitional destruction) of the planet.
