This piece depicts the danger and ruggedness of the desert. Although the cowboy appears ready for the fight with machete at hand, the rattlesnake has caught him unawares and will likely be the victor. The choice to sleep between two cacti also suggests additional foolhardiness on the part of the cowboy which further questions his readiness to survive desert living
