Years ago, I participated in a project that involved learning the art of origami and producing hundreds of paper cranes. This past summer several friends were battling cancer. In Japan the crane is thought to represent healing. I ordered large sheets of handprinted Chiyogami paper. Traditionally origami figures are made with small paper squares. Using an 18” square, my goal was to create large sculptural figures. When completed, I held one up to a window in my studio, where it looked perfectly at home against the deep blue sky. This was the inspiration for “Folded into Flight."
