Steve McQueen was the product of a difficult childhood. His stepfather was a stunt pilot who left his mother six months after meeting her, and his stepfather beat him so severely that he ran away when he was 9. McQueen was sent to live on a farm with an uncle. Although he was dyslexic and partially deaf due to a childhood ear infection, he enlisted in the Marines and was assigned to guard the Presidential yacht of President Harry Truman. McQueen began acting school with the G.I. Bill.
