Born in the Connemara region of West Ireland and raised in Leeds, England, Peter O’Toole became an overnight superstar with his performance in the epic 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, an almost four-hour homage to the brave British soldier T.E.Lawrence, which earned him the first of eight Academy Award nominations. To prepare for this role, O’Toole read all he could find about the adventurer, studied Bedouin culture, lived in a Bedouin tent, and became comfortable riding a camel.
