In 1968, I had never heard of Louis Armstrong. Carol was eight months pregnant, and we were on our way home in a ’63 Ford Falcon. We were listening to the radio, and “It’s a Wonderful World” came on. To this day, it’s my favorite song. I love the lyrics, but also the way he sang it. You had to read between the lines to get the full message. At the height of the Civil Rights movement, when he couldn’t stay in the same hotels where he played, he wrote such a beautiful song.
