There was a point when I was like a zombie during my multi-year battles with pneumonia, always so tired and resting. Jill, one of my three children, pushed me into painting the Icons in this book by reminding me that I should follow the advice I had always given to her and her siblings: “Get off your ass and do something.” Several weeks later, I began painting a portrait of Judy Garland.
