The stage, film, and television access Cicely Tyson was known for her stereotype-shattering portrayals of strong African American women in the 1970s. She was a classy woman, and I liked her acting. During her career, which spanned seven decades, she refused roles that demeaned Black people and urged her colleagues to do the same. She criticized any production that cast Black characters as criminal, subservient, or immoral and insisted that Black people be portrayed with dignity.
